A New Beginning is the twenty-second episode of Season 6 of Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman, and the one hundred fortieth episode of the series.
Colleen has finished her pre-med studies and applied to medical school, only to be accepted at the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania. Dr. Mike is thrilled along with Colleen, until Andrew proposes. Dr. Mike suggests they wait until Colleen finishes medical school, but Colleen isn't willing to wait, and manages to convince Dr. Mike to change her mind.
Meanwhile, Preston buys Jake's share in the Gold Nugget. When the Panic of 1873 hits, Preston's brokers demands payment of the stocks he invested in full and he struggles to find money to pay his investors. Preston is even forced to sell the hotel.

"A New Beginning" earned the stylists of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman a nomination for Outstanding Hairstyling for a Series at the 1998 Primetime Emmy Awards. The stylists on this episode included Deborah Holmes Dobson, Virginia Grobeson, Laura Lee Grubich, Christine Lee, Elaina P. Schulman, Jennifer Guerrero-Mazursky, and Kelly Kline (hairstylist to Jane Seymour).
Jane Seymour was also nominated for a 1998 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
