Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that affects the mucus membrane of the nose and throat. Currently, it's rare in the US and the rest of the developed world due to vaccines.

  • difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
  • fever/chills
  • hoarseness
  • malaise
  • nasal discharge
  • sore throat
  • swollen glands in neck
  • thick, gray membrane covering the throat and tonsils

CausesEdit

  • contact with contaminated personal items like facial tissues
  • inhaling airborne droplets
  • sharing contaminated household items like hand towels(rare)
