Luck of the Draw is the seventeenth episode of the Season 2 of Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman, and the thirty-fourth episode of the series.
A card shark teaches Matthew how to read people when playing poker, and rigs it so that Matthew keeps winning, making Matthew believe poker is an easy way for him to make money, and results in him quickly getting addicted to playing. Dr. Mike and Sully try to convince him that his addiction is putting his future at risk, but he doesn't listen until a big loss. In trying to help Matthew, the Reverend confesses his sordid past. Afterwards, he, Robert E., and Sully confront and persuade the evil card shark to return Matthew's money.
Meanwhile, Brian works hard to get the money to buy a caged eagle from Loren so he can free it.

- Hank holds a poker tournament at his saloon.

- Matthew inadvertently teaches Dr. Mike that she'll always want to protect him
- Arc: Brian saves an animal. Animal saved: an eagle owned by Mr. Bray. After working and saving up money, he buys the eagle from Mr. Bray to set it free. Brian first saved an animal, a deer, in Law of the Land. He next saves an animal, a horse, in the two-parter The Abduction.
- Arc: Con man. Julius Hoffman is a card shark who targets and convinces Matthew to play poker. Julius also beats up, and robs Matthew of money he wins. He also uses Matthew to rob the townspeople of their money indirectly. In separate poker games Matthew sells his wagon, gambles away Ingrid's money she gives him, and gambles away the engagement ring Dr. Mike gave him and Ingrid in Rite of Passage. Matthew wins back his wagon, and Sully buys back the engagement ring. Matthew eventually gives the money he won to the Reverend as a contribution to the Church.
