Where the Heart Is is the sixth episode of Season 2 of Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman and the twenty-third episode of the series overall. It is also the show's first 2 hour episode.
Dr. Mike gets word that her mother (Elizabeth Quinn) is in the hospital. She travels to Boston with Matthew, Colleen, and Brian to see her. While there, Dr. Mike disagrees with the diagnosis of her mother's attending physician (Dr. Hanson), and treats her mother accordingly. While doing so, she both shocks the medical community in Boston, and impresses Dr. William Burke. She also realizes how much she has missed her mother, sisters, and Boston at the same time.
Sully struggles with what to do for awhile, before taking the, albeit subtle, advice of Cloud Dancing and following Dr. Mike to Boston. While he's in Boston, he sees a new side of Dr. Mike and must decide if he's going to go back home, or fight with Dr. Burke for her.
Information[]
- First appearance of the city of Boston on the show. Only pictures and Dr. Mike's house were seen in Pilot.
- Places visited in Boston include: Boston Medical Society building (twice), train depot (multiple times), candy store (twice), hospital (multiple times), the Quinn family house (multiple times), the fancy restaurant (twice), birthday party building, Hanson and Burke physician office building (multiple times), Opera House (twice), William Cotter and Sons clothing store (twice), orphanage, and Dr. Burke's new physician office building. It is unknown if the orphanage and hospital seen in Where the Heart Is are the same orphanage and hospital seen in Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman: The Heart Within.
- Sully and Dr. Mike confess their love for each other. Sully confesses on the train back to Colorado Springs in Boston, and Dr. Mike confesses after disembarking the stagecoach in Colorado Springs at the end of the return trip from Boston.
- First time Dr. Mike’s sisters meet Sully.
- Dr. Hanson's ego and sexism blinds him to consider Dr. Mike's treatment for Mrs. Quinn.
- Mrs. Quinn's birthday cake is a white and pink four tier cake with one white candle on top. Mrs. Quinn's birthday guests sing "For She's A Jolly Good Lady" which is a remix of the song "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow."
- Arc: Dances. Mrs. Quinn has a dance at her birthday party in Boston although she doesn't dance herself. Michaela dances with William Burke at the birthday party, and Sully at the fancy restaurant. Colleen teaches Sully how to ballroom dance for his and Michaela's date at the fancy restaurant. The next dance is the Sweetheart Dance in Best Friends.
